アメリカで大学を卒業後20代でフィリピンに移住。クラークのCIPなどのフィリピンの語学学校で7年間英語講師として活躍。留学生から非常に人気が高く『スター講師』と呼ばれていました。2016年に講師を辞め、現在はオンライン講師として世界中の学生を相手に活躍中です。今回フィルイングリッシュは、クラーク在住のテイラーさんにご自身の指導経験をベースにしたフィリピン留学の実力や印象について語っていただきました。
フィリピン留学について
Q1：フィリピン語学学校勤務経験者としてフィリピン留学をどう思いますか？
初めてフィリピンに来て語学学校の教育システムを見たときには大変驚きました。今まで定番の留学先としてはシンガポール、カナダ、アメリカ、オーストラリアなどが有名ですが、なぜ最近フィリピン留学が選ばれるようになったのかすぐに理解できました。フィリピンとその他の留学先では大きな違いがあります。そしてフィリピン留学のほうが英語がうまくなり、留学投資の見返りが大きいと私は確信しています。
フィリピン留学のメリットについて
Q2:アメリカ、イギリスなどの欧米圏留学に比べフィリピン留学のメリットは何ですか？
多くの学生は英語圏の国々を留学先に選びますが、期待は外れ、その（学習面での）結果に失望します。マンツーマン授業がないという部分が大きいです。グループ授業だけでは学生に流暢な会話力を訓練させ、上達させる十分な時間を与えることができません。欧米留学ですと費用は少なくともフィリピン留学の2倍！フィリピン留学はマンツーマン授業と少グループ授業で構成されるので学生を英語に慣れさせ、早く上達させます。
マンツーマン授業の効果について
Q3:マンツーマン授業についてどのようにお考えですか？
マンツーマン授業が欧米と一番異なる点です。上達を早める秘訣はここにあります。講師一人が生徒につきっきりです。英語力は上がるしかないです。マンツーマン授業はあなただけの時間です。大グループ授業で時間を分けあう必要はありません。
フィリピン留学のメリットについて
Q4:アメリカ、イギリスなどの欧米圏留学に比べフィリピン留学のデメリットは何ですか？
フィリピン留学でもデメリットはいくつかあります。ですが、それほど深刻ではありません。英語圏で生活すれば英語にどっぷり浸かれる事が出来ます。メニュー、道路標示、旅行者の会話などすべて英語です。ですが、フィリピンも似たような英語環境を提供している感じを受けます。
フィリピンにはアメリカ文化が浸透していて、どこに行ってもそれを見て感じることが出来ます。私には5歳の息子がフィリピンにいます。彼は英語しか喋れません。ですが現地の人々は英語を使い、学校は英語でクラスを進行するので生活に支障はありません。
フィリピン人の訛りについて
Q5:フィリピン人英語講師の発音の『なまりや特有のアクセント』について指摘する声もありますが、これについてコメントはありますか？
フィリピン人はネイティブ英語スピーカーではありません。ですが、フィリピン人は歴史的にアメリカ文化の影響を強く受けています。アメリカ映画やテレビショーを見て育ちます。一番大きく影響を受けている部分です。
フィリピン語学学校はフィリピン人講師を採用する際に厳しい基準を設定しています。私の経験から見ると訛りは大きな問題ではありません。私は日ごろ生徒たちに、『あなたたちは私みたいに正確な発音をすることは難しいですよ。でもそれは全く問題ではありません。』と言ってききました。たとえばアメリカ国内でさえ、地域特有のアクセントを持つ人たちが沢山います。学習のゴールははっきりと相手を理解させる英語を話せるかどうかです。ここが非常に重要なポイントですが、この部分を学習する上でフィリピン講師の指導はまったく問題ありません。
フィリピン人講師の個人差の実力について
Q6:フィリピン人講師の英語力に個人の差はありませんか？
フィリピン人は文法や他の特定科目の指導が特に優秀です。ただスピーキングはそういうわけにはいきません。ですが、講師の中にはアメリカ人と同じ発音でしゃべる人もいます。語学学校で働きながら気付いたことですが、学校のマネジメントは講師の能力を見極める力が優秀です。スピーキングクラスの担当がフィリピン人講師であれば、その講師はスピーキング分野で優秀な人であるはずです。
英語ビギナーが基礎英会話ができるまでどれくらい？
Q7:英語ビギナーが基礎英会話をこなせるまでフィリピン語学学校でどれくらいかかりますか？
一概には言えませんが、こたえは簡単です。英語ビギナーたちは短時間でものすごく早い上達を見せます。英会話力0からスタートし、2～3週間後で基礎英会話が出来るようになった生徒たちを見てきました。もちろん個人差はあります。ですが、マンツーマン授業のおかげで短期間の間に信じられない程の上達を見せます。
フィリピン留学の留意点について
Q8:フィリピン留学システムで何か改善点は見出せましたか？
実際に数年間勤務し、フィリピン留学業界を見てきましたが教育システムはほぼ完璧です。語学学校関係者はいつも改善点を模索しています。だからこそ語学が校は講師に対する広範囲の教育に力を入れているのです。そして総合的に見ればフィリピンの教育システムは素晴らしいです。他に比べ少額で留学可能。そして学生たちは短期間で英語力の上達を感じることができます。オーストラリア、カナダ、アメリカへの留学生の数が激減した理由はここにあります。フィリピンは今一般英語教育とテスト対策の教育ではベストです。

Q1:As a Native American, and as a former Philippines school teacher, what do you think of effectiveness of Philippines English schools?
By now most people in the world are very familiar with studying English in the Philippines. When I first found the schools here and saw how they were doing things I was very amazed. I quickly understood why so many students were choosing to study in the Philippines rather than more traditional choices like Singapore, Canada, America, and Australia. There are very big differences and there’s no doubt in my mind that you can improve and get much more value for your investment by studying in the Philippines.
Q２:What are positive points of Philippines study in comparison to study in English language schools in Western countries such as US and U.K.
Many students choose to study in schools based in English speaking countries but are extremely disappointed with their expectations and results afterwards. The most obvious problems is that many of these schools don’t offer 1:1 classes. Instead, they offer larger group classes that really don’t give students enough time to practice and improve their fluency and confidence in the language. At the same time, these schools are often at least twice as expensive and the majority of these students just end up spending time with students who speak their native tongue. This is not the way to improve spoken English. The Philippines offers 1:1 classes supported by small group classes and this is truly the way to get more experience with the language and learn at a much faster pace.
Q3：What do you think of the unique man-to-man-class system in Philippines?
This is the biggest difference. This is what makes students who study in the Philippines improve at much faster rates than those in other Native English-speaking countries. In the end, if you are working one on one with a teacher and they are giving you all of their attention you have no place to go but up. It means that this is YOUR time and not divided into just a few minutes between a large group class.
Q4: What are negative points of Philippines study in comparison to study in English language schools in Western countries such as US and U.K.？
There are a few negative points but I’m not sure they are very negative. It’s true that if you study in another country you will be immersed completely in English. But I believe the Philippines offers a similar atmosphere. All menus, road signs, universities, and conversation between tourists and locals is all in English. I feel like the Philippines also offers a huge English atmosphere. There’s very much American culture entrenched in the Philippines and you can see it everywhere you go. ( I have a 5 year old son here in the Philippines and he ONLY speaks English. Because most people and most schools also use English he doesn’t have any problems at all)
Q5: Do you have any comments on so-called “peculiar accent” or “dialect” noticed by some Philippines English teachers.
Filipino teachers are not native teachers. With that said, the Philippines has a strong American culture historically. They grow up watching American movies and tv shows and this is the English that they have the most influence from. Also, the schools in the Philippines have very strict hiring standards when it comes to their Filipino teachers. In my experience, I never saw this as a big problem. I always tell my students, you will never sound exactly like me and that’s ok. For example, in America there are many different people who come from different places with different accents. The goal is to speak clear, understandable English and there’s no problem with that when learning from Filipino teachers.
Q6: Is there any English proficiency gap between them?
The native language in the Philippines is not English. They are not native speakers. That is not a bad thing. Filipinos are excellent with grammar and other subjects. Not just speaking. Some Filipinos speak English exactly like Americans. What I’ve noticed about the schools in the Philippines Is that they are very good at recognizing the strengths of their teachers. If you are learning speaking from a Filipino teacher you are definitely learning from a well-qualified teacher in that area.
Q7: How long does it take for English beginners to be able to speak a basic English conversation in Philippines language schools?
This is a very broad question but there is an easy answer. Beginners will always see the most improvement in the quickest amount of time. I was always so proud of my students who were almost 0 English-speakers and then after just a few weeks we were already able to have basic conversation. Each person is different but with the one on one attention you will see incredibly improvements in a short amount of time.
Q8: Is there any suggestion for better English educating and guiding system of Philippines English schools?
After working in this industry for many years now I think the system is already perfect. They say there’s always room for improvement and that’s why schools in the Philippines are always focusing on extended education for their teachers but overall the system Is wondeful. For a fraction of the cost of other countries students can come here and really see and feel improvement in less time. I think this is why there has been such a sharp decrease of the number of students studying in Australia, Canada, and America．The Philippines is the new leader of studying ESL and test-prep English
